Spire farm

It's grim up north.

Building on the foundations of Viking metallers like Bathory, Finntroll carved out a unique new direction in extreme metal, fusing black metal with traditional aspects of Norse and Sami culture and creating

a sound that teetered between Pythonesque absurdity and ground-breaking genius. Jakens TEl (trans: The Time Of The Hunt), released in 2001, is Finntroll at their blistering best. The title track incorporates 100mph accordions (never, before this, a viable metal instrument) and joik (look it up on Wikipedia) chanting. At times they sound like native Americans and at others the sound is like some bizarre Yiddish polka from Eastern Europe.

This should definitely be the soundtrack to your next warpainted Viking raid. •••••••
