is no better or worse than anything they've done post- Hysteria . It’s competent, well-produced pop-rock from perhaps the only consistently successful British rock group over the last 20 years. I can’t believe that it’s 24 years since my leg was last pissed on at Donington, and the British press still don’t get what Leppard are up to.

We all know that the rock press have the power to build and destroy careers. And with great power, young Jedis, comes great responsibility – promoting British rock benefits us all. Are we ever going to get past this cynicism, grow up and stop bringing down anyone with a modicum of success from this small and sceptred isle?

And why the hell haven’t you mentioned Jake E. Lee’s recent Re-Traced CD? It makes my blood boil.

Big man: just cos one of our reviewers didn ’ t like the new Leppard album, it doesn ’ t follow that we a) don ’ t understand Leppard (which other magazines have devoted eight pages to them in the past three months?) or b) don't support British rock. It ’ s only a few months since we did a feature on the Best British albums ever and did a five-page feature on Hysteria . Play fair.

THE LIFE OF BRIAN Best magazine ever!...
ROAD ACCIDENT I read your July issue...
