'Return Of The Grievous Angel A Tribute To
Gram Parsons' batmoadvance CD)
***** As a general rule, most tribute albums are a waste of time bad cover versions of great songs or identikit copies that make the listener only yearn to hear the originals. This album however, is an exception to the rule. The songs of country rock legend Gram Parsons are safe in the capable hands of executive producer Emmylou Harris and artists such as Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Wilco and Whiskeytown. Highlights include a storming version of 'Hot Burrito #1' by The Mavericks, and a Lynyrd Skynyrdstyle boogie workout by Wilco on The Byrds' classic '100 Years From Now Plus Sheryl Crow and Emmylou Harris give an exemplary lesson in vocal harmonies on 'Juanita; the touching ballad originally performed by The Flying Burrito Brothers. There are also several welcome vocal collaborations such as Steve Earle singing with the original Byrds bassist/vocalist Chris Hillman, and Lucinda Williams duetting with old stager David Crosby. Aside from the dour Cowboy Junkies version of 'Ooh Las VegasrThe Return Of..: is enjoyable throughout and well worth investigating.
