Classic Rock Best New Band Award winners return and step up.

K entucky youngsters Black Stone Cherry have taken great strides since winning the Best New Band award at the Classic Rock's Roll Of I Ionour in 2007. Drummer John Fred Young previews the band's biggest UK tour so far.

While opening for DefLeppard and Whitesnake at Wembley Arena, guitarist Ben Wells remarked: "Some day we want to come back and headline this place". A year later, having played Brixton Academy and now Hammersmith Apollo, his remark doesn't seem so rash. [Laughing] I guess not. We've always had a positive mind-set. With us, it's always a case of when we do something, not ]( Strive for your dreams, get out there and do it. So hopefully, yessir, we will headline Wembley Arena some day.

This summer the band also played on the main stage at Download on a day unofficially known as 'classic rock Sunday'. How was that?

Oh, ma n. Haying been on a smaller stage the year before, it was awesome. We'd have played at eight in the morning. Seeing all those flags and people, it was incredible.

Will it make you nervous that Duff McKagan and his band Loaded are the support act on the band's UK tout?

Of course it will. We always strive to play as well as these legendary bands, to become performers like they are. That kind of disbelief keeps us grounded. Do you already know Duff? We shot the breeze with him at the Graspop Festival [in Belgium]. He's like a walking encyclopedia of rock'n'roll. Not only am I looking forward to hearing more of his stories, hopefully we'll also get to do some jamming.

When do the band start thinking about their third album?

The most important thing is to make the best record possible. The Things My Father Said is doing pretty well for us as a single.

So your label, Roadrunner, are not hurrying you along?

Oh no, we have to slap them around every once in a while but they're fine. We're gonna rake otir rime. We might record in Nashville again, possibly even come to the UK. Heck, we may even come to your house and cut it there. DL

The tour begins in 'Birmingham on October 10.
