SWEDISH METAL RULES, RIGHT?

For a country with a relatively small population, Sweden has produced more than its fair share of metal bands. Matthias Eklundh has the inside track on what we had assumed was a very healthy grass-roots scene going.

“There’s nobody in Sweden, so there’s absolutely no audience,” he says grimly. “The thing is, Sweden is the kind of place where you write music and then go abroad and play. Some kids who are fans of the Swedish metal scene, which is pretty happening, come here because they think that there must be concerts every day, but there really aren’t. We go back to Sweden to recharge our batteries, then go back abroad to harass you.”
