In the UK, early leader Carl Douglas’s ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ got the chop from reggae singer Ken Boothe’s version of Bread’s ‘Everything I Own’.

The Bay City Rollers were, for once, conspicuous by their absence.

In the States, the No.1 position rotated a pre- Grease Olivia Newton-John (‘I Honestly Love You’), Stones sideman Billy Preston (‘Nothing From Nothing’) and soul queen Dionne Warwick in league with the Spinners (‘Then Came You’). Further down, rock fans could enjoy Bad Company’s debut ‘Can’t Get Enough’ and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Sweet Home Alabama’.
