The Misdemeanour Tour

(Classic Pictures) Initial hopes for this hour-long DVD weren't high. Although I confess I may be one of the few writers to hold a grudging regard for UFO's 'Misdemeanour' album, the 1985 show I witnessed was nothing short of shambolic and embarrassing.

For the benefit of the cameras, the band held it together pretty well for this Oxford show (at least singer Phil Mogg says it's Oxford; for all he knew it could have been the Timbuktu Apollo) — maybe they were held in the dressing room at gunpoint, or perhaps the off licence closed early?

Guitarist Atomik McClendon emerges with much credit, whizzing up and down the frets with melodic panache on tracks such as 'Mean Street' and 'Heavens Gate'. Mogg's introductions are shockingly sober. In fact, save for the topless, stocking-clad cowgirl who emerges for no reason whatsoever during the instrumental section of 'Name Of Love', just about the only things worth laughing at are keyboard player Paul Raymond's fishnet gloves.

The inclusion of just two classic UFO songs — 'Only You Can Rock Me' and 'Doctor Doctor' — will deter casual buyers, but in truth, this DVD is actually rather good.
