Irros , ,71 , Sean Penn film about a young idealist abandoning modern life for the Alaskan wilderness might sound like an album drowning in its own earnestness, but against considerable odds Into The Wild is an unassuming delight.
Some artists would have just distilled a bunch of instrumental mood enhancers from a half-memorable main title theme and grabbed the cash. Vedder, however, furnishes the project with proper songs, and his gravelly voice that could imbue a shopping list with gravitas. The highlight is a cover of Indio's Hard Sun rendered with widescreen grandeur.
If the Neil Young-wreathed Yield is your kind of Pearl Jam album, this slight, subtle but surprising work might be too. •••••••
