‘Noises From The Cathouse’

(Communique)

A quarter of a century ago everyone was going acronym crazy. We weren’t content with just NWOBHM, we had to have even more regional and elongated terms like the NENWOBHM – the North East New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. On the crest of which were the Tygers Of Pan Tang. But while that band promised much, in the end they stalked at a level well below that achieved by Iron Maiden and even Saxon. However, here we sit in 2004 and the Tygers are still doggedly battling on... and on. By any criteria, ‘Noises From The Cathouse’ is far from being a world beater. But it is a decent record – perhaps better than most would have feared. Only guitarist Robb Weir remains from their (almost) glory days, but the current line-up can bat a mean riff. And while vocalist Richie Wicks has a very limited range, there’s a gusto about his performance that is rather charming. There are certainly no classics here, but ‘The Spirit Never Dies’ and ‘Bad Bad Kitty’ prove these cats can still scratch. ★★★ ★★
