'Who Else'
Epic (493041 2) ***** Hot on the heels of his techno-rock milestone 'You Had It Coming', Beck's 1999 foray into sequencing (and two-finger salute to the purists) gets a mid-price reissue. While never less than tantalising it's hard not to see 'Who Else' as a tentative precursor to the latest release. Beck keeps a firm grip on his traditional roots, lavishing that full-bodied 'woman tone' on 'Back To The Blues', 'Angel' and the Celticflavoured 'Declan'. But there are also hints of his prevailing direction in the tight-programmed rhythms of 'What Mama Said', `THX138' and 'Hip-Notical Beck fudges the fine line between eclecticism and indecision as only he can.
