Maverick

Beatific soundscapes from Deftones frontman.

Of all the bands thrown up by the nu metal

explosion,

Sacramento’s Deftones were the most intelligent, with frontman Chino Moreno’s abstruse, aching vocal melodies weaving elements of emo and post-rock in among the crushing seven-string riffs.

Now, with Team Sleep Moreno has taken those ambient leanings one step further. A hypnotic fusion of Cure-style melancholy, deft flashes of electronica and My Bloody Valentine-inspired atmospherics, songs like Ever recall the post-metal futurism of bands like Isis. The involvement of top-drawer producers Terry Date (Pantera) and Ross Robinson (Slipknot) lends a cutting-edge sheen.

And while at 15 tracks it occasionally crosses the line between ‘challenging’ and ‘exhausting’, this is fearless, forward-looking stuff.
