Warner Bros

Upset but upbeat Americans aim high.

If the enormodome success of Green Day has proven anything to the youth of today, it is that you can sell loads of records without being perceived as a total sell-out berk. Long Island five-piece Taking Back Sunday are the latest bunch to straddle the line between hardcore roots and the shiny FM mainstream, and Louder Now – their third album – continues their journey from juvenile despair to the top of the Billboard chart. For this is fist-clenching, facepunching alternative rock with an addictive commercial sheen.

The likes of MakeDamnSure , Miami and Spin are toweringly impressive and hugely enjoyable outbursts which prove that to Taking Back Sunday the chorus is the thing. Very big and very clever. ■■■■■■■■ ■■ ■■■■■■■■ ■■
