BREAKTHROUGH ACT
From page 22 of Classic Rock Magazine January 2011
Imelda May
Wonderously reviving the spirit of rockabilly.
Y ou’ve been making music for 10 years, so this Breakthrough award must be very pleasing?
Yes, it feels very good. I was on tour in Turin, and although I didn’t know I’d won I was told I’d “have a good night” if I attended. Not that I’m here for pats on the back or acknowledgement, I’m just wondering if they’ll let me take the trophy on the plane when I rejoin the tour tomorrow. It looks a bit like a weapon, doesn’t it?
How much does it mean to you to win an award like this?
Oh, you wouldn’t believe it. Coming from Classic Rock , which is a proper music magazine that covers all sorts of bands, big ones and small ones, I’m so incredibly thrilled.
You’ve opened for Jeff Beck at shows but you specialise in rockabilly. How broad is your taste in music?
I love all sorts of bands – especially ones that know who they are and do it better than anyone else. Motörhead, for instance. Only Motörhead sound like Motörhead.
Would you like to dedicate your Breakthrough award to anyone?
To my husband, and also to my family who never told me to get a proper job .
