Umbrella

Musical Friends Reunited project that’s probably more fun to make than to listen to.

Chris Squire may have reformed his preYes group after almost four

decades, but little on Syndestructable has the innocent psychedelic charm of their original incarnation. It also inevitably fails in its attempts to be as ambitious as Squire’s ongoing day-job group, although choral touches and other devices are reminiscent. The cheapsounding recording and often dry, unimaginative production doesn’t help the very average material, although Cathedral Of Love could have been impressive had it been betterhoned and more powerfully rendered. Good on Squire for helping give his old sparring partner a new crack of the whip, but Steve Nardelli’s thin, undistinguished vocals and the limitations of this project explain why Squire originally hooked up with Jon Anderson and co.
