Congratulations to PINK FLOYD guitarist DAVID GILMOUR and ex-SQUEEZE keyboard player JOOLS HOLLAND, who recently visited Buckingham Palace to collect MBEs. Gilmour’s was given for his various charitable endeavours, including donating the profits from the sale his £3.5 million mansion to the homeless. Meanwhile, Holland has assembled an all-star cast for the latest in his series of big-band albums. ERIC CLAPTON, PETER GABRIEL, PAUL RODGERS, RON WOOD, STEVE EARLE, MICHAEL MkDONALD and SMOKEY ROBINSON all feature on ‘Jack O’The Green’... COURTNEY LOVE has pleaded not guilty to two counts of drug possession, and requested to be considered for a programme that allows non-violent drug offenders to receive treatment instead of jail... PETE TOWNSHEND and ROGER DALTREY of THE WHO are to perform at a March 29 concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall to celebrate the venue’s 150th anniversary... Finnish power-metal band STRATOVARIUS have joined Sanctuary Records, reportedly signing the three-album deal with the blood of an elk...

MOTÖRHEAD’s leader has cut material with members of THE DAMNED, SKEW SISKIN and REVEREND HORTON HEAT for the new record, and has discussed recording a song with glamour model JORDAN.

He also hopes to persuade JEFF BECK to contribute... The organisers of the Sweden Rock Festival are rumoured to be

negotiating with MÖTLEY CRÜE to headline the 2004 event.

Crüe bassist NIKKI SIXX recently confirmed plans for the reunion of the band’s classic line-up, commenting: “Who knows what it’ll sound like, but it’ll be us”. Singer VINCE NEIL is due in court on April 22 to defend himself against accusations that he beat up a prostitute. In related news, BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION, the band built around Sixx and LA GUNS guitarist TRACII GUNS, will now release their debut album ‘Here Come The Brides’ through Sanctuary in March.

Until the intervention of Sanctuary, who signed the group for three albums, the record seemed likely to be a Japan-only release... MEAT LOAF, who collapsed on stage at Wembley Arena, had undergone heart surgery before embarking on his European tour. The singer has been recuperating from Wolff- Parkinson-White syndrome, which can lead to extremely rapid heartbeat rates, at a London hotel, and will shortly announce a revised touring schedule... MARILYN MANSON is said to be considering recording a duet with his unrelated GARBAGE namesake, SHIRLEY... DEEP PURPLE guitarist STEVE MORSE has revealed that the instrumental track ‘Contact Lost’ on the band’s current ‘Bananas’ album was inspired by the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. Copies of Purple albums were found in the shuttle’s debris after it broke up over Texas in February.

Mission specialist KALPANA CHAWLA was a big fan of the group... Former IRON MAIDEN singer PAUL DI’ANNO has a new band called SCREAMING MONKEY. Di’Anno is also one of several guests on ‘Back For The Future’, a new album from Swedish band SPEARFISH. Also included are URIAH HEEP guitarist MICK BOX, ex- SAMSON singer NICKY MOORE, former NAZARETH guitarist MANNY CHARLTON and DAVE HILL of DEMON...

ZAKK WYLDE is recording a new BLACK LABEL SOCIETY album at Paramount Studio in Los Angeles. MIKE INEZ has played some of the bass parts, and other guests are expected on the album, due in late March... ALANIS MORISSETTE’s new album ‘So-Called Chaos’ is released in February...

Australia’s HOODOO GURUS are recording their first album since 1996’s ‘Blue Cave’ with producer KIM SALMON. ‘Mach Schau’ will be available through EMI in early ’04... Drummer MICHAEL WILDWOOD has left MONSTER MAGNET for unspecified reasons... DAVID CROSBY and GRAHAM NASH are to record their first album together as a duo in almost 30 years... Former ASIA/ROXY MUSIC/ URIAH HEEP member JOHN WETTON has formally apologised for an alcohol-impaired, below-par performance at London’s Mean Fiddler. “John will now be taking a six-month hiatus to focus on personal matters, his health and well-being,” the statement said... TESLA’s new studio album, ‘Into The Now’, is due via Sanctuary in February...

Former HUMBLE PIE bassist GREG RIDLEY has died after being hospitalised for a chest infection and pneumonia. He was 56... GUY SPERANZA, the vocalist on RIOT’s fist three albums, has passed away, aged 47, after a battle against pancreatic cancer... TONY THOMPSON, the 48-year-old drummer who played with JIMMY PAGE, ROBERT PLANT and JOHN PAUL JONES at Live Aid and was a member of CHIC, THE POWER STATION and CROWN OF THORNS, has died of cancer... Composer MICHAEL KAMEN has died, aged 55. He suffered a heart attack. Known for his work with METALLICA, BRYAN ADAMS, ERIC CLAPTON, PINK FLOYD and QUEENSRŸCHE, he had been suffering from multiple sclerosis since 1996... Classic Rock sends its condolences to friends and relatives of all the deceased.
