'Thnieadless Horseman'
(Black Leather)
Australia has g iven the world some truly memorable musical moments (now is not the time recap on these), but Pe g azus are not one. Callin g themselves 'Australia's Number One Premier Heavy Metal Band' leaves one to wonder if the state of Aussie metal can be so poor. They are a useful, competent outfit, yet so g eneric as to leave listeners stone cold. Elements of ludas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy clash in a melan g e of styles and attitudes, but Pe g azus never escape these enormous influences. 'Ballad Of A Thin Man' is a tribute to Phil Lynott that ends up too close to the source, while 'The Headless Horsemen', 'Dra g on Slayer' and 'A Call To arms' ripple with hand-me-down riffs. There is real talent in this band, especially g uitarist Johnny Stoi, but if Pe g azus are to pro g ress they must g et away from their roots and stretch. *****
