Battle Hymns

1982

Muscled-up mythical gods of thunder Manowar have provided much amusement over the years. But look behind the loincloths and you’ll find a powerful heavy metal band dangling before your very eyes. Battle Hymns is a seminal sword and sorcery-fied offering, and you can hear how much it’s influenced the so-called ‘battle metal’ bands of today. Yea verily, this is music forged in Thor’s throne room and belted out in the tombs of Valhalla. You’ve even got Orson Wells providing some stentorian narration on Dark Avenger . But our fave track has gotta be Metal Daze and the lyric: ‘Only one thing really sets me free/Heavy metal, loud as it can be.’ By Odin’s beard, never was a truer word spoketh.
