Castle Music/Sanctuary

Revealing collection of songs that inspired the metal gods. This is a twoCD collection of 27 songs by bands that influenced Metallica when they were a fledgling band in San Francisco. Listening to the songs in this context, a template emerges for Metallica’s own sound: the frantic rhythm of Discharge and Diamond Head; the classic metal of Black Sabbath and Motörhead; the ferocious, garage spirit of The Misfits. Listening to Mercyful Fate, you can hear where James Hetfield’s phrasing came from. With some surprising inclusions (Nick Cave, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Anti Nowhere League), this is a collection of quality hard rock which, alluring premise aside, holds together well in its own right.
