Almost 30 years after San Diego's Iron Butterfly made their indelible mark on rock history with In - A - Gadda - Da - Vida recently estimated as the 31st biggest-selling album of all time three members of the band's classic line-up reunited for a European tour. It wasn't a victory lap, exactly.
Whereas Butterfly played to 1 , 10,000 people a night in the late ==4. 60s, the gig they filmed in Germany in 1997 drew a modest audience of a few hundred. But the band put on a spirited performance, culminating in a gloriously elongated jam through In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.
And as the accompanying documentary proves, they remain philosophical about the highs and lows of the rock'n'roll life. Iron Butterfly created one of rock's true masterpieces. But, as keyboard player Doug Ingle says: "In every crowd there's a tomato with your name on it."
