SABATON Primo Victoria Black Lodge

Gumby Euro-metal, but also good fun.
Remember when everyone thought almost every European metal band were a joke? Meet Sabaton, a bunch of Swedes bringing back memories of Heavy Load, Running Wild and Faithful Breath. Except that while you’ll certainly chuckle at Reign Of Terror, chortle through Purple Heart and get belly ache from Wolfpack, there’s something so naively charming about this music that you can’t help but feel relieved that there are still bands around in 2005 who have no sense of irony, and play clichéd metal for its own sake.
As much a throwback as 3 Inches Of Blood, Sabaton have the edge, because you can actually feel their devotion to longboat-driven heavy metal.
This is gloriously dumb – the way some metal should always be.
