Susan Holmes designs ‘rock swimwear’. Her credentials? She’s Mrs Duff McKagan.
“I never saw a Guns N’ Roses concert,” says Susan Holmes.
“I was on my own world tour: I’d be modelling in Cuba one day, Sweden the next, England the day after... Travelling like mad – and, y’know, Paris ain’t exactly rock’n’roll heaven.” To rock fans she’s Mrs Duff McKagan, but Susan Holmes is also a model who’s been on the cover of Vogue, Glamour, and Playboy and appeared in countless ads for fancy-dan clothiers like Yves Saint Laurent, Dolce & Gabbana and Diesel. “But at heart I’m a beach girl from San Diego. I’d be on the catwalk thinking, ‘How can I mix the fashion world with the beach girl?’” Three years ago, she cracked it, designing swimwear with a rock twist: now Gwen Stefani, Carmen Electra and Heidi Klum are wearing them. Thank. You. Lord. “The press call me the rock’n’roll swim queen. I’ve just always been a big rock fan and luckily it’s very big in fashion right now too.” She met a newly sober Duff in 1996, after being set up on a blind date (well, it wasn’t exactly blind for him: “He’d seen my pictures in a magazine – of course, I was nearly nude...”) and they’ve been together ever since.We may be seeing more of her too: US TV is currently trailing her for a reality show. “You know Desperate Housewives? I’m going do the Rock Housewives show – talking to Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro, hanging out with Steve and Teresa Tyler. Send me some copies of Classic Rock and I’ll get them on there...” Consider it done, ma’am.
