‘The Unnamed Feeling EP’ (Vertigo)
Comprised of six back-catalogue songs recorded live in Paris, plus the title track from Metallica’s latest album ‘St Anger’, this EP is a holding exercise, not a piece of must-have product. Still, for those who didn’t attend the three-gigs-in-one- day-fest that Metallica played in France last June 11 it’s a fairly potent snapshot of what went down at Le Bataclan on what proved to be one of the sweatiest evenings of 2003. The gig was also one of the first that bassist Robert Trujillo played with the band.
Sound quality is good, and for the most part Metallica bludgeon and pummel with some panache. Interesting, though, to note the inclusion of a version of ‘Ride The Lightning’ in which Hetfield announces: “I forgot the fuckin’ words!” Is that indicative of rock’n’roll attitude, or just plain shoddy? All told, you’d probably do better to save your hard-earned for a ticket to see Some Kind Of Monster, the Metallica film that recently premiered at the Sundance Festival and is due for general release later this year.
