'Mark Hollis'

(Pond Life PLVP002CDI ***** Metallica fans, read no further: for the rest of us, if less is more, then this minimalist, but hardly minimal, solo outing from the voice of the late Talk Talk is cosmic in size, if occasionally comic also in its pretension. Using only acoustic instruments and recorded on just two mikes, Hollis revels in the sound of silence.

Every creak of a chair, every dying sigh of Hollis' yearning voice creates a vibe as fragile as a butterfly's wing: moody, meditative, and achingly beautiful. Luckily, he's aided and abetted by musicians of an equally delicate disposition, notably Henry Lowther's trumpet and Chris Laurence's bass. Hush-tastic.
